Principal's Corner
It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as your new elementary school principal. In January 2026, I will also begin serving as the director of special services. Having spent my career in small, close-knit communities, I am genuinely thrilled to become a part of the Union Township family.
My professional journey began as a school psychologist, and I later served as a director of special services for 11 years. Most recently, I had the privilege of serving as interim principal at Cozy Lake Elementary in Jefferson, an experience that solidified my passion for building-level leadership. Additionally, I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Montclair State University since 2007, which has further shaped my perspective as both an in
structional and operational leader.
My work is deeply rooted in relationships, inclusion, and the belief that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated. With master's degrees in Educational Psychology, Educational Leadership, and Restorative Practices, I lead with empathy, transparency, and connection. I am committed to mental health and inclusive education, and I have a passion for supporting a wide range of learners, from gifted and talented students to those in self-contained classrooms. My approach is simple: meet each child where they are and give them a stage to shine.
On a personal note, I am the proud son of two lifelong educators. My wife, Sarah, is a special educator and instructional coach. Together, we have three wonderful children who fill our lives with sports, books, art, and plenty of joyful chaos:
Tess (16) is a civics-minded volleyball player, dancer, and voracious reader. She's entering her junior year at Indian Hills High School, was recently elected vice president of her student council, and writes for the school newspaper.
Nate (14) is a thinker, tinkerer, and outdoorsman. He's heading to Bergen Technical High Sch
ool to study automotive collision repair, plays lacrosse, and is my go-to video game buddy. This summer, he's off on a two-week camping and rafting trip.
Julia (7) is our creative, compassionate, and highly determined youngest. She's learning piano, loves YouTube art tutorials, and has tried just about every sport, especially enjoying flag football and basketball.
Our family is rounded out by two very active rescue dogs, Willow, a six-year-old German Shepherd, and Maverick, a Treeing Walker Coonhound.
As a parent myself, I understand the trust it takes to send your child to school each day. I am a firm believer in open, honest, and timely communication, as well as shared celebration and transparency, even during challenging moments.
An organization's strength comes from the relationships it builds and its willingness to listen to the unique perspectives of the people it serves. I am excited to get to know you, your families, and the incredible staff at Union Township. Please don't hesitate to reach out or say hello. I officially begin on August 11th, and I look forward to starting this meaningful work with all of you.
I am also planning to attend the Tigers Connect event on August 22nd at 6:30 PM at Finn Park. I hope to see you there!
Best,
Mr. Steve
